Perry Eidelbus said...: I had touched on Brazil's use of sugar ethanol here. Brazil produces so much sugar as a percentage of its economy that sugarcane-derived ethanol is now an economical fuel. That is, it's competitive now because oil has gotten more expensive.

The increased demand for sugar has driven up prices to their highest in seven years. It's perfectly expected. So when someone says we need to switch the country from petroleum to ethanol, he ignores that corn (and ethanol) would necessarily get more expensive. Price controls? Yeah. Sure. But, after all, the person who suggested that also thinks that the senators from New York, Connecticut and California are "big oil's champions."
